Are You Sticking Your Head in the Sand?

You know, there are a couple of old adages that can really hurt you when you allow them to rule your financial life… you know the ones that I am talking about… out of sight, out of mind. Or, behaving like an ostrich, and sticking your head in the sand.

When it comes to your credit score, out of sight/out of mind can be extremely dangerous, even if you don’t have the best credit score. In this day and age, not paying attention to what’s going on with your credit can not only keep you from getting the credit you need when you need it, but it can also allow identity thieves to move in, steal your identity, ruin your good name, and create problems that you won’t even know exist until it’s too late to do anything except try and clean up the mess. And, cleaning up that kind of mess can take years and years!

Another reason that you need to pull your head out of the sand, even if your credit score isn’t that good, is fairly simple – at some point in your adult life, you will need credit. Whether it is to buy a car, rent a house or apartment, or simply because you’re trying to land that one really good job you’ve been shooting for all your life – someday, at some point, someone is going to pull a credit report on you. And, when they do, will you know what it says?

Now, I understand, if your credit is bad, it’s really easy to just ignore it and hope that it all goes away…but trust me, ignoring it doesn’t work. And, believe it or not, it’s really not that hard to fix a lot of what’s on your credit report. Yes, you’ll have to work at it for a few months (and in some cases, even a few years), but it can be done. And when you see the results of just a little bit of effort – you’ll be amazed AND you’ll want to keep working at it until that new car, new home, or even just that little credit card that you need for emergencies is in the palm of your hand!
